Healing Isn’t the Same as Feeling Safe
One of the biggest surprises people experience during healing is this:
You can make incredible progress AND still feel uncomfortable.
We expect healing to feel peaceful. Like we’ll wake up one day, breathe a sigh of relief, and everything will finally feel easy. Sometimes it does.
But more often, healing feels unfamiliar.
If you’ve spent years living in survival mode, your nervous system has learned that tension is normal. Hypervigilance is normal. Overthinking is normal. Even chaos can feel strangely comforting because it’s what your body knows.
So when things begin to settle, your mind might immediately look for the next problem. You might question your relationship. Wonder if your healing session “worked.” Pick apart a conversation. Create a worst-case scenario because your body is adjusting to a new way of existing.
Real healing isn’t just releasing trapped emotions or changing limiting beliefs. It’s teaching your mind and body that peace is no longer something to fear.
It takes repetition. It takes compassion.
Sometimes it takes sitting with the uncomfortable feeling that nothing is actually wrong.
If you’re in that season right now, be gentle with yourself. You don’t have to force yourself to feel calm. You don’t have to convince yourself you’re healed.
You just have to notice when your nervous system reaches for old patterns and gently remind yourself:
“I’m allowed to experience life without waiting for the other shoe to drop.”
Healing isn’t becoming someone who never struggles. It’s becoming someone who no longer believes they have to live in survival mode. That kind of transformation happens one safe moment at a time.
