When Your Reaction Feels Bigger Than the Moment

Have you ever had a reaction that felt way bigger than the situation in front of you?

Maybe a small comment hits a nerve. A change in plans creates a surprising amount of anxiety. Someone pulls away and suddenly you feel rejected, even when part of you knows that isn’t what’s happening.

Sometimes the present moment isn’t the whole story.

Our nervous system, subconscious beliefs, and stored emotional experiences can all influence how we respond. A current situation may brush up against something older: a time you felt dismissed, unsafe, overlooked, abandoned, or like you had to stay in control. It doesn’t mean every strong emotion needs to be analyzed or “cleared.” But when the same reaction keeps showing up, it can be worth getting curious about what might be underneath it.

Instead of asking, “Why am I reacting like this?”

Try asking, “What does this remind some part of me of?”

That small shift can create a lot more compassion and a lot less judgment.

Energy work can be another way of exploring those deeper layers, especially the patterns and beliefs we may not be consciously aware of anymore.

This is something I try to remind myself of too. When something hits me harder than I expected, my first instinct isn’t always to lovingly examine it. Sometimes I’m annoyed that I’m bothered at all. But I’ve learned that the reaction usually makes a lot more sense once I stop judging it and get curious about it.

Sometimes what looks like an overreaction is really an old part of us recognizing something familiar.
